This is an annual presentation for Mary Ellen Bates (Bates Information Services). In a jam-packed 45 minutes she tells you X number of things you need to know, to be a better searcher. This year it was '25', though she skipped over a couple.
- Alltop: An online magazine rack - highly selective, well-done; Web 2.0 version of Yahoo Directory; top news - find category that works for you; RSS aggregator;
- Viewzi: For visualizers - results in tiles format & from 4 search engines; customization power; clustering, visualization & meta-search all in one.
- Lexiquo: German site w/ squirrely interface, useful because it offers wealth of synonym suggestions derived from lexical analysis, looking at root of terms.
- Keotag: Skims for the buzz; searches across Web 2.0 sites (Technorati, Deli.cio.us, Twitter, Google Blog, etc); skims across topic.
- Carrot2: Another engine finely tuned for customization; choice of sorting algorithms, choice of search engines, clustering or no. cool graphic display.
- Awesome Highlighter: Highlight your text on webpage & copy of page saved w/new url; you send that url to someone who can then pull up page with your highlighting.
- TextRunner: Good readyref tool; looks for assertions of fact using linguistic analysis; oriented to answering questions.
- Google Translated Search: use it to search foreign language content; e.g., I enter my search terms in english, they are translated to french (or whatever) and run through french databases/documents; results returned to me with english on left, french on right, I give to my french client in french.
- TwitterVenn: Compares frequency of word use in Twitter and generates Venn diagrams to show relations. Another way to visualize.
- Visual Wikipedia: Searches all Wikipedia articles, combines results w/Youtube; shows subcategories & visual relationships via clouds & clusters.
- World Wide Science: One stop search in 50 national science portals, federated search engine; shows you where to drill deeper.
- ReadWriteWeb: Blog providing web technology news & one of top 20 blogs worldwide (according to Technorati); ID most popular blogs on a topic, get up to speed on new topic quickly; build a social media cheat sheet for any topic.
- Newseum: 658 front pages from 63 countries; top 10 front pages of the day; archive of front pages for historically significant events.
- Wordle: fun! Generates word cloud for any body of text; can customize shape, colors.
- Get Conference Buzz - Search technorati w/conference blog tag (e.g., CIL2009); use Twitter to track conference using #CIL2009
- Google Maps MashUps: Check these out: Wikimapia: An online editable map; decribe anyplace on earth. TaxiWiz: Figure out in advance how much a taxi ride is going to cost. Flickrvision: combining Flickr's API with Google Maps, shows most recently uploaded pics from around the world in real time. HousingMaps: listing of housing for rent and for sale in most major cities. Findbyclick: Combines Google Maps with various store locators. HealthMap: Global disease alert map; latest updates on diseases and outbreaks around the world.
