So, since I'm sure you were going to ask, here is my opinion. The problem is twofold: First, there is the nature of our daily routine. There is just nothing aerobic about what we do. We need new choreography - aerobic renditions of library tasks. Little dances, or cheers, cued by certain events or patron remarks, maybe a little 'Ta-DA' dance to go along with our reference closer. You get the idea. There is opportunity here. Secondly, many of us are creatures of comfort. We like a fire in the hearth, a cat lying about (or two or three), a bowl of ice cream (what the hell, throw some sprinkles on that), a nice soft blanket or throw on the lap, and a good book (at least until we embark on the good snooze). None of that, you will notice, burns calories.
Oh, I know there are skinny people out there who will point out where we went wrong. I have a friend who insists that people get fat because they are unhappy. WRONG! (and almost reason enough to end a friendship). Anyway, right now I don't like them much so they needn't bother to leave comments. I think a nice bowl of ice cream might make me feel better . . .

I've noticed the w i d e librarian thing as well. But it's really difficult to avoid all the goodies on the communal table in the branch too! I'm not always good at the whole will power thing.
